So, for the last three years you've taken Gold in BMX Dirt at the X Games. How did you feel when they announced that Dirt had been dropped from the X Games line-up?
It was kind of a surprise, but not really. The way they've pushed dirt off to the side for the past few years-it's not a surprise really. They (ESPN) were just running it earlier in the week, complaining that it's getting poor ratings-of course that's gonna happen if they just jam it on real quick. You know, it's really disappointing for all the dirt riders out there because it's been in the X Games since the start. But what can you do? You just move on; there's plenty of other stuff to do!

What did that announcement mean to your career plans and your riding future?
It means a lot more park, and just enjoying dirt and the dirt contests that are around. Take Red Bull Elevation for example. That's a real good contest and that's gonna be around for a while yet.

You've been solid at Elevation in Whistler, even winning it last year. Will you compete again at the event this summer?
Yeah. They've got one in England called the Empire Dirt, then they just did one in Guadalajara, which was good.

You love that event, and it seems like all the riders are fans of it. What makes that dirt event so much fun?
The guys do a great job with the Dew Tour, but when it comes down to it it's just a straight six-pack. Up at Elevation they get creative with the course and it's actual trails on the side of a hill, and they mix the contest format into that. It's just really good jumps and a really good atmosphere with the way it's done: all the athlete's needs are handled and it's proper. So, everyone wants to be there.

Plus the village is pretty fun too.

Yeah, it's madness once the sun goes down. Everyone's out and it's good times!

You've sort of shifted focus to Park riding... how's it been for you?
I'm about to head over to Singapore for the Metro Jam, so that should be pretty exciting. The season is just getting underway and I'm going to be riding a lot of comps this year, and still riding a lot of dirt because I love riding dirt.

Even though its been dropped from X, would you say that Dirt jumping is still your favorite?
Yeah, for sure. X Games is just one contest, once a year. It was cool to have that title (3-time Gold medalist) but it's time to move on. I'll still be riding dirt, with or without X Games.

You've always ridden both, but what's the biggest difference between riding dirt and park?
Fitness, there's not so much difference. It's the actual format that different. You have to plan out a run that's like a minute long as opposed to hitting a six-pack of jumps with like four tricks. That's the only difference really-you have to plan out a run. But all and all, it's just riding.

What about the MegaRamp? Have you ever thought of trying that?
I'm not really that big a fan of it actually. I'll watch it, but it's pretty crazy they (X Games) took Dirt out and replaced it with this "stunt ramp." I'm not really a fan of it, but whatever.

Danny Way has said it's in some respects the future of skateboarding... would you say that's true for BMX?
Well, it's definitely BMX, it's just not my kind of BMX. It's cool for the guys who ride it-the guys who do crazy tricks over it-but it's definitely not for me.

Besides Metro in Singapore, what other comps can we look forward to seeing you in for '07?
We've got Metro like you said, and then I'll be home for a couple weeks, then off to England for the Red Bull Empire Dirt, then Dew Tour, then the next weekend after that is Elevation. Then there's a whole bunch of other stuff going on, like demos and jams throughout the year. It's gonna be a busy year, even without X Games. It'll be a different year, but still a busy year.

Plus you'll probably do a tour with DC this year, right?
Probably near the end of the year. Get it organized-and all the riders are keen-so it should be a pretty good trip towards the end of the year.

We saw on your "Firsthand" that you're also into surfing. How long have you been surfing for?
I grew up close to the beach, so I've always been surfing on and off since I was 12. Every chance I can get I go surfing. (If there's) any surf trips going on, I'm going.

How often do you get in the water?
I haven't been in the water since I've been back in the States, so it's been about three and a half weeks now. I usually like to get in there at least once a week. The water's too cold here though (in Southern California). It was so hot in Australia! I'll wait for summer to kick right in, then I'll be going a bit more.

Besides BMX and surfing, what other type of stuff is filling your days this spring?
Table tennis takes up a fair bit of time. Me and my roommate Dave play a lot. Then there's Guitar Hero, of course.

You just got back from Australia. How long were you there for?
I was there for almost two and a half months. I spent Christmas there, then just hung out with friends and family. Went camping, went surfing; it was a good summer.

Now that you live in the States, do you find yourself missing AUS a lot?
Yeah, it's funny. It's like that old saying: you don't miss it till you're gone.

What's the number one thing you miss about AUS?
It's got to be the beaches, for sure. Just the weather and the beaches and warm water all year round and the relaxed atmosphere.

Where's your favorite place to go ride in the world?
There are too many great places to ride in the States. I'd have to say...well...I don't know! It's too hard to pick just one.

Which spot is simply dreadful?
Dreadful? Bakersfield. I'll drive through Bakersfield to go to Woodward West, but I will not stop in Bakersfield. That's for sure.

Thanks for taking the time, Corey.

Sure thing. Anytime!
