ANTHONY’S DOUBLE FRONT: A QUICK INTERVIEW

Featured Image 1
Did you see Anthony Napolitan’s Double Front Flip at X Games 15? It was nothing short of gnarly, and despite the fact he didn’t medal Anthony undoubtedly made BMX history that Friday night in Los Angeles. Every time a trick of this magnitude gets pulled, it really opens up the BMX world’s mind to what’s possible. After pulling double front, what’s next for Anthony? He’s got ideas…

Here, we catch up with the DC flow rider about the judging, the trick-learning process, and those sick DC’s he was wearing when he made BMX history.

1. So, double front at X Games on the MegaRamp. Pretty gnarly. Would you say it’s the hardest trick you’ve ever done?
I wouldn't say it’s the hardest trick I've ever done, but I'd have to say it's the ballziest trick I've ever tried.

2. How do you even develop that trick? We’re assuming you don’t just think of it and huck yourself over the 70 foot gap one day. And how hard was it to translate that to MegaRamp?
Well, I tried it last year into the foam pit off a 6 foot lip. I landed on my back about 100 times and was over it. This year I tried it out of the blue into the same foam pit and it started to work! As soon as I learned it and found out where I was in the air I knew that I wanted to do it on the MegaRamp. Once it was time to start riding the MegaRamp, my mind started to figure it out. So Chad Kagy and I took a trip down to Travis Pastrana's house. I sent it into his pit and pulled it first try! After that I took it to the Mega resi bag at Woodward—pulled it there. That was the last time I did it. Two weeks later I found myself at X Games sending it on the 70-footer.

3. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much did the DC’s you were wearing help you with the double front?
Well I'm riding in the new BMX shoe called the Tactic, and I have to say that it is my new favorite shoe! I love these shoes—the grip’s amazing! I'm sure that the shoes helped me stay locked into my pedals.

4. How ticked off were you at the judges scores? The fans seemed upset by the low marks.
I was a little upset, but I knew why I got a low score. It was because I didn't do a trick on the quarter pipe. The second time I was more upset with myself.

5. You did straight air on the quarterpipe after both double front makes. Looking back, do you think a barspin or something mellow on the quarterpipe would’ve helped you medal?
I knew that I had to do some sort of trick to medal. But I wasn't going to do just any old trick. I wanted to do an invert because I knew that I could go high and look stylish the whole time. Both attempts failed because I got thrown off the quarter really awkward. I’ve woken up the past two mornings after Mega and the first thing I said was "WHY?!?" But I'm not bummed—I made BMX history!

6. A year ago I would’ve said a double front was impossible on the Mega. What do you think the first variation of the double front will be going forward?
I've already got plans for 2009…

7. After Pastrana did the double back, he said he’d never try it again. Do you think you’ll ever try the double front again?
Most definitely! I know where I am at all times and it feels very good as well. You'll be seeing this trick again!
